Leaf Raking Tips

R
aking leaves can be one of autumn's more enjoyable chores, and it can also be a great workout. Raking is a moderate physical activity that uses muscles throughout nearly all of your body and burns calories. Get in the fall spirit and make your yard work easier and safer by heeding these leaf raking tips from Brigham and Women's Hospital orthopedist, Tammy Martin, MD:

     * Dress in layers.: Even if it is chilly outside, your body will quickly heat up as you start to rake. Wearing layers will allow you to peel off extra clothing to avoid overheating.

   * Wear supportive shoes: Raking often requires us to step on uneven terrain and leaves can be slippery. Wear supportive shoes, such as sturdy sneakers or hiking boots to provide the best traction and prevent your back from tiring easily.

    * Warm up: Like any physical activity, warm up your muscles before you start working them to avoid strains. Raking uses nearly all the muscles in your body-your arms, chest, shoulders, legs, and upper and lower back.
