New Roof Tile Methods to Become Law
Although Hurricane Wilma created widespread roof tile damage throughout Boca Raton and other parts of Palm Beach County, some roofs were able to withstand the storm’s pounding winds. Those roofs strong enough to remain intact during Wilma were largely due to better installation methods created last year following Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Having shown positive results with the new methods, local roofers and Palm Beach building officials have worked together to make those methods a permanent part of the Florida Building Code, beginning Dec. 16. Other roofing changes are being examined for next year. Reese Moody, spokesperson for Monier Lifetile in Boca, said the tile installation changes would be enforced among all statewide roofing contractors once the rules take effect. “Ongoing training of roofing contractors will also occur, ensuring future awareness of the proper execution of these guidelines,” Moody said. The new changes primarily target edging tiles, also known as hip and ridge tiles, which do not waterproof a home and are simply used for aesthetic purposes. Because of faulty installation techniques utilized by roofers, the battering force exhibited by Frances and Jeanne made edging tiles from numerous Palm Beach homes fly off easily. According to South Florida roofing industry statistics, a new tile roof can cost approximately $25,000 while replacement tiles go for about $20 each. Noticing the abundant damage to its properties, representatives of Delray Beach-based developer Northstar Homes became actively involved in the quest to implement much-needed changes to edging tile installation. --More on Roof Tile Law-- |
